Welcome Letter to the Emory Community

Liz Carlino

Council President
Assistant Director, Dinning Operations
Division: Emory Campus Life

I am honored to serve as this year’s Staff Council President. My focus will be Strengthening Staff Support.  At Emory we are fortunate to have some incredible resources at our fingertips; Staff Council will highlight these programs and provide opportunities for staff to engage directly with the team’s leading these efforts. This will include educational job aids, professional development workshops, community building events and volunteer opportunities. My hope is that staff will feel more valued, secure, and supported in their role at Emory. As well as equipped with resources and tools to navigate the ever-changing world around us.

As a university, we have faced a great deal of organizational changes over the last year. President Fenves has moved into the role of Emory’s sixth Chancellor. Justice Leah Ward Spears, a member of the Emory Board of Trustees, will serve as our interim president. This year Kevin Moody joined Emory as the Chief HR Officer and serves as the sponsor for Staff Council. In his short time here, Kevin has been a champion for staff. Kevin attended in person meetings, held a Conversations with Kevin town hall in the spring that allowed staff to hold space for each other and get to sit in the room with one of the top leaders in the organization, and attended our evening Staff Social event for 2nd and 3rd shift employees. Because of his partnership, several important Council initiatives became a reality.  On behalf of the Staff Council, I would like to thank Kevin for investing in, engaging with and encouraging the staff at Emory. I am excited to see what we are able to accomplish together this year.

Along with shifts in leadership, there have also been structural changes in areas such as Campus Life, which I have been proud to call home for the last 7 years. Change is never simple, and it has brought uncertainty for many. Yet what remains constant is the heart of this community, our students desire to learn, grow, and leave their mark on the world; our faculty’s steadfast commitment to excellence in education; and our staff’s dedication to making sure the university not only runs but thrives every single day.

One of my roles as Staff Council President is to serve as a bridge between staff and administration. I welcome your ideas, concerns or questions. I promise to do my best to ensure our voices are heard.  Feel free to schedule a time to meet via outlook or zoom or simply stop by and say hi at the Emory Farmer’s Market- every Tuesday on McDonough Plaza 10-2. I look forward to connecting with you.
